Soo Line Community Garden Wins 2026 Environmental Impact Award
How Do You Transform Contaminated Land into a Thriving Community Garden?
The Soo Line Community Garden, located along the Minneapolis Greenway at 2845 Garfield Avenue, has served the surrounding neighborhood since 1991. When soil testing revealed contamination from the site's former railroad and grain storage operations, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and diesel range organics (DRO), the community needed a path forward that protected both people and the environment.

Our Approach to Environmental Site Remediation
Braun Intertec led environmental remediation efforts, working closely with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) to develop a balanced, cost-effective strategy. Because removing all impacted soil was cost prohibitive, our team designed a targeted approach:
- Northern portion: Fully remediated to support active gardening in raised beds, with clean soil and protective barriers in place.
- Southern portion: Left undisturbed to preserve a native pollinator garden, with signage and fencing to prevent direct contact with impacted soil.
The entire site was designed to meet ADA accessibility standards, providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all community members.
What Are the Benefits of This Project?
- Safe, accessible gardening space for more than 100 gardeners and community members
- Outdoor education and gathering opportunities that strengthen neighborhood connection
- Protected native pollinator habitat that supports local biodiversity
- ADA-compliant, inclusive design so everyone can participate
- A proven model for sustainable brownfield redevelopment that balances cost, environmental protection, and community need
Who Were the Project Partners?
This project was a true collaboration. Our partners included the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and Aune Fernandez Landscape Architects.
