Why Building Science Matters: Insights from the Experts at Braun Intertec

By Braun Intertec | December 11, 2025

The building science department at Braun Intertec represents a specialized group of industry experts that are focused on understanding how buildings perform, age, and respond to their environments. This field brings together a mix of engineers, architects, consultants, and technicians whose expertise is shaped by both technical knowledge and hands-on experience. Building science at Braun Intertec can be divided into three pillars: structure evaluation, structure monitoring, and building enclosure. Many projects result in overlaps across these pillars, and collaboration is sparked. This creates opportunities for comprehensive assessments and integrative solutions.

Structure Evaluation

Structure evaluation centers on determining the “why”, “how”, and “now what” behind building behavior. Why is the building cracking or leaning? Why is the material failing? How did the distress occur, and what steps can be taken to address it? Onsite condition assessments, often supported by destructive and non-destructive testing, help uncover root causes. Our team can also provide yearly assessments of parking garages and roof tie-off anchors, as well as inspections of newly constructed storm shelters.

Structure Monitoring

Structure monitoring focuses on risk management for our clients. This work involves documenting existing conditions of nearby buildings before construction begins, developing strategies for risk mitigation, and monitoring vibrations while construction is ongoing. The goal is to alert the client of potential risk due to construction activities.

Building Enclosure

This pillar addresses all six sides of a building. Services include water or air barrier inspection and testing, roof inspection and testing, or window testing. Work spans both new construction and forensic evaluation of existing structures. Experts in this service also support code compliance efforts and help interpret local performance requirements.

This introduction highlights only a portion of the capabilities our building science team has. Come back for future blogs where we dive into more specific services within this department.
