Franklin County, Kansas retained Braun Intertec to perform a pavement evaluation for a 17-mile stretch of Old Highway 50, extending from Eisenhower Road to Yearling Road. Our fieldwork for the project included documenting existing pavement conditions using a truck-mounted camera with geo-referencing, using truck-mounted equipment to perform ground penetrating radar (GPR) testing to estimate pavement layer thicknesses, obtaining 17 pavement cores at locations selected based on GPR data and pavement condition, and performing dynamic cone penetration (DCP) testing of subgrade material at core locations. Our engineering evaluations included assessing the existing pavement condition using the Pavement Surface Evaluation and Rating (PASER) system and providing pavement rehabilitation and/or reconstruction options. Based on the information collected and varying pavement sections in northern and southern portions of the project area, we provided options for both cold-in-place recycling (CIR) and full-depth reclamation (FDR) pavement repairs.
