Lemmon Municipal Airport Runway and Taxiway Reconstruction
Braun Intertec was hired to perform a geotechnical investigation for the proposed runway 30 and taxiway A reconstruction at Lemmon Municipal Airport in Lemmon, South Dakota. After coordination with our client and the Lemmon airport on access and utilities, we drilled 37 soil borings throughout the pavement areas selected. Pavement cores were taken, and thickness of the pavement and aggregate base layers were completed to aid in the potential recycling of these materials on site to provide a cost saving to the airport during construction. We performed a variety of ASTM laboratory tests on the samples received from the airport to help evaluate subgrade and pavement. These tests included moisture contents, sieve hydrometers, and California bearing ratio (CBR). Soil classification and report with laboratory results, and recommendations were provided and reviewed with the project team. Our recommendations were used to provide subgrade preparation and pavement design for the proposed improvements per FAA Circular for Airport Design.
