Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library
The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum building is under construction just west of the Burning Hills Amphitheater in Medora, North Dakota. The building is designed to provide a glimpse into Theodore Roosevelt's public and private life, highlighted by his time on the Elkhorn Ranch near Medora. The building is being constructed to overlook to Badlands with placement being near the edge of an existing bluff. The design includes using sustainable construction methods and materials throughout the process.
Braun Intertec was retained in 2021 to provide geotechnical evaluation services on the project. Our scope of work included evaluating the subgrade soils for support of foundations for the main building, retaining walls, pedestrian boardwalks and a bridge, outlook structures, and solar panels. In addition, we evaluated the stability of the bluff that the building is placed on and how close the building could be constructed to the edge, to take advantage of the scenic views available. We performed standard penetration test borings, installed groundwater monitoring wells, performed laboratory testing and provided recommendations for construction. As design progressed, we were requested to perform additional services including pressuremeter testing. In June 2023, we were retained to provide the construction materials testing for the project as well. We are under contract to perform excavation observations, topsoil stripping observations, materials qualification and compaction testing for new fill placed, reviewing settlement data for comparison to calculated amounts, air and water barrier testing and structural steel testing and observations. Construction is anticipated to continue through 2025.
