Advanced Concrete Design & Evaluation

Decorative Line Pattern

Our advanced concrete science services include developing high-performance concrete, solving challenges with concrete production and performance, and evaluating new and existing concrete structures.

With experience in concrete issues including both the plastic and harden state, Braun Intertec assesses concrete needs, including design and evaluation of concrete pavement and slabs-on-grade. We evaluate concrete structures using a wide range of nondestructive techniques and work in conjunction with our petrographic laboratory to understand the root cause of any distress. We provide a complete story of what occurred during construction or the life of your structure and provide recommendations for repair or maintenance.

Concrete Foundations

A successful slab-on-grade will carry the expected loads while remaining durable and uniform. We design optimum slab-on-grade construction while minimizing cost. Using the latest technologies including fibers, admixtures, and hardeners, we help you get the desired performance from your foundation.

Key Services

  • New slab design
  • Pre-placement meetings
  • Design and submittal review
  • Existing slab repair
  • Forensic evaluation

Concrete Pavements

Concrete provides a durable and long-lasting pavement material relative to other types of pavements. We use a variety of standards to provide designs and specifications for pavement projects.

Key Services

  • Interstates, freeways, tollways
  • Principal arterials, collectors
  • Local roads
  • Intersections, roundabouts, driveways
  • Car parking, access lanes
  • Shopping center, service lanes
  • Bus parking
  • Truck parking (single and multiple unit trucks)

We understand how to achieve the optimum design for your concrete pavement. Design considerations include expected daily traffic, subgrade properties, jointing and reinforcing layouts, and concrete thickness to design the pavement you need for your project. Additionally, we can provide creative solutions to pavement problems, such as enhancing subgrade support with subbase materials, installation of concrete overlays, utilizing economical roller-compacted mixture designs, and integrating multi-layered composite systems.

Concrete Nondestructive Testing

At Braun Intertec, we rely on many nondestructive techniques to provide insight into internal distresses of structures. Most projects require the use of multiple techniques to detect flaws or damage in concrete structure. From fire damage to corrosion, we have the techniques needed for your project.

Test Methods

  • ASTM C803, standard method for penetration resistance of hardened concrete
  • ASTM C805, standard method for rebound number of hardened concrete
  • ASTM C1383, standard test method for measuring the p-wave speed and thickness of concrete plates using the impact echo
  • ASTM C597, standard test method for pulse velocity through concrete
  • ASTM C876, standard test method for corrosion potentials of uncoated reinforcing steel in concrete
  • ASTM D6432, standard guide for using the surface ground penetrating radar method for subsurface investigations
  • ASTM C4788, standard test method for detecting delaminations in bridge decks using infrared
  • ASTM C4580, standard practice for measuring delaminations in concrete bridge decks by sounding
  • parallel seismic
  • The spectral analysis of surface waves SASW-S
  • Ultrasonic pulse echo phased array phased array

Braun Intertec can also design and recommend complex concrete solutions for many types of projects in our advanced concrete, cement and mortar laboratory.
